The Bike Lending Library is like a Public Library for bikes. Rather than checking out a book, you can check out a bike for free. It helps individuals and organizations in need of a bike or a bike fleet to be able to perform some of their own programming to defer the large, up-front cost of purchasing bikes until they are self-sustaining.
The cost of the initial bike or bike fleet is a major expense that must be covered by either an individual, family, or organization in order to be able to participate in or run a Bike Club of their own. The goal of the lending library is not to give bikes away, but to temporarily provide bikes to youth or youth programs who cannot afford them that commit to actively using and maintaining them. By being offered a loan rather than a gift, the recipient is provided a bike at no charge but also given the responsibility to actively use the bike and keep it in working order. In the event that this does not occur, the bike can be reclaimed and provided to a different youth rider or organization.
This program has been used by the Austin High Mountain Bike Team to provide riders without bikes the chance to try mountain biking without an initial financial investment. It has also been used by schools and organizations to supplement their existing fleet as well as parents wanting to participate in programming prior to purchasing or earning a bike of their own.
