A Bike Fix-A-Thon is a bicycle maintenance clinic where kids can bring their bikes to get a quick safety and maintenance check, get repairs depending on the supplies available, and receive a Bicycle Report Card. It can occur during the school day as an elective activity, or outside of school hours as a separate event. If you have students riding to school on a regular basis, these events can be useful to ensure students’ bikes are safe and well maintained throughout the semester or leading up to or part of a Ride to School event.
Students bring their own bikes to the event and we assist them with doing a full bike safety check and work with them to make needed adjustments and basic repairs. The rider is expected to “assist” the mechanic, not drop off their bike and return later when it is done. Although the student won’t be doing most of the technical work, they will learn about what parts of the bike are not working, how that impacts the usability and safety of the bike, how to repair it, and how to avoid having the issue occur in the future.
The student will receive a Bicycle Report Card with grades detailing the bikes’ starting condition and final condition. The Bicycle Report Card also includes notes on additional needed repairs that were outside the scope of the event.
The Bike Fix-A-Thon can be paired with a pizza party or something similar as an additional draw for participants if needed.
