On Friday, Austin Transportation organized a pop-up bikeways demonstration at Reilly Elementary School to celebrate the upcoming bicycle and pedestrian improvements along Romeria and Denson Drive. We led a bicycle skills challenge course for students and their families to get ready and excited for the two-way protected bikeway that will be installed in front of the school.

Austin Transportation’s temporary bikeway, if only the permanent one could have flowers too!

Students gathered around to learn and practice helmet fitting, hand and verbal signals, scanning and riding with a group. We saw some familiar faces from Bike Club back in 2017 and met many new kids all excited to ride together. After quickly mastering the skills challenge course we rolled out onto the temporary (soon to be permanent!), two-way protected bikeway. It is safe to say that there is a great group riders ready and excited for the bikway to be be completed.

Safety first!

Isn’t it nice to see so many young bikers riding safely on the street?

Once the improvements are completed later this month, we will be leading the first Bike Train to Reilly Elementary. Students living in the same area will meet up at a specific spot and we will all ride to school together, like a train, using the improved facilities. Starting in February, we will also be starting up the Bike Club again at Reilly and hope to see the skilled group of riders from last week!
